JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Food Science is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to work in the laboratory of Dr. John Hayes on multiple research projects. These projects include (a) measurement of chemosensory function in nominally healthy volunteers in a non-clinical setting, (b) measurement of food intake and eating microstructure under controlled conditions, and (c) consumer acceptability of various food products. Desired qualifications include previous experience in ad libitum feeding studies in humans, systematic coding of eating microstructure, classical psychophysics or applied sensory testing, and/or use of standard statistical software (e.g., SAS, R), and specialized sensory data collection software (e.g., Compusense, FIZZ).

This position also includes responsibilities associated with Penn State Sensory Evaluation Center, including contributing to experimental designs, managing scheduling of multiple studies in the facility, data analysis and archiving, and reporting of study results. Work in the SEC is fast paced, as the facility typically tests several hundred people a week in routine taste tests. Internal clients include graduate students and/or faculty within Food Science and other departments in the College of Agricultural Sciences. External clients include large multinational corporations and smaller food companies within Pennsylvania.

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field and be able to provide evidence that all requirements have been met for completion of the Ph.D. prior to the effective date of hire.

Applicants should have a strong publication record, exhibit creativity in their work, and enjoy collaborative interactions. This is a term position funded for one year with renewal based on availability of funding and performance. Salary is based on experience and qualifications, using the NIH postdoctoral stipend pay-scale as a reference.

Interested applicants should upload a CV, names of three professional references and cover letter describing research interests and career goals. Application materials should be addressed to Dr. John Hayes (jeh40@psu.edu).
