BASIC FUNCTION:
Angel S. Byrd, MD, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Howard University College of Medicine, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to aid in basic, translational immunology based research, including, but not limited to, neutrophil isolation, cell culture, protein and nucleic acid isolation, western blot analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), quantitative real-time PCR, tissue biobanking, among other tasks.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
No supervisory duties.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include assistant/associate deans, directors, department heads/chairs, faculty, staff and students at the College and school levels; and, deans, directors and executive level officers at University level. External contacts include governmental agencies such as Federal and the District of Columbia Agencies, health professionals, students, parents and the general public. Fulfill tasks in collaborative team of students and researchers from Howard University.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Investigate the immunopathological contributions to dermatologic diseases. Assist in basic, translational immunology based research, including, but not limited to, neutrophil isolation, cell culture, protein and nucleic acid isolation, western blot analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), quantitative real-time PCR, tissue biobanking, among other tasks. Conduct translational medicine through multiple and varied approaches including clinical, research, and social mechanisms.
- Explore the role of immune cells in Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).
- Foster collaborative approaches to studying and understanding the pathophysiology of HS. Employ research methods including the analysis of sectioned tissue (immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF)), fresh tissue and isolated immune cells to analyze proteins (western blot (WB), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), zymography), and RNA/cDNA (quantitative PCR), as well as next generation sequencing/metagenomics).
- Coordinates and assure development of pertinent reports and their timely delivery.
- Conducts data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation responsibilities Participates in grant writing, development of manuscripts and reports, and conduct of primary and secondary data analyses.
- Participates in weekly and/or bi-weekly group meetings, and professional training with or without students.

- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented interdisciplinary healthcare environment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants should have received, by the activation date of the postdoctoral fellowship, a MD; PhD; and/or MD, PhD. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated: excellence in oral communication skills; a commitment to and interest in advising students from diverse backgrounds; effective interpersonal and collaboration skills; an appreciation for the Howard mission; and the ability to contribute to a positive, collegial, work atmosphere.
